A Charm Invests A Face

Love Poems by Emily Dickinson

A charm invests a face
Imperfectly beheld.
The lady dare not lift her veil
For fear it be dispelled.

But peers beyond her mesh,
And wishes, and denies,
Lest interview annul a want
That image satisfies.

The lady sees a man with a face that's very attractive to her (a charm invests a face), but she is "imperfectly" viewing it because she is behind a veil. She is afraid to lift the veil because then she might get a clearer look, and then he won't be as attractive anymore (the charm will be dispelled).

But still, she peers through the mesh of her veil, wishes to know him better, but denies herself lest talking with him (an interview) kills her desire (annul a want) that for now just looking at him satisfies.

tl;dr: She wants a guy based on something shallow and is afraid if she gets to know him better, she will find him unattractive.

i think that the poem is about how a women has been search for the ONE so she is afraid of lifting her veil too soon, causing her to end up with the wrong person ending in divorce. then it says "but" so the peers seems like this guy may be a high school sweet heart and some people hope it goes well and others hope it ends soon. and she fears that as i said before that the law will not allow the marriage just because the guy is soo gorgeous the only reason she marries him
I think...

I believe that this poem is about how a women should not be so focused on her looks. It's about how sometimes one should not be so focused of her looks but more on her personality. So then she will know that she is loved for who she is and not just for her looks.

I think it might mean that she really loves someone but it's secretly 'behind the veil' and she hopes that just looking at him 'that image satisfies' might satisfy her somewhat because she cant have him. She wishes that she can have him, but since she knows that she can't she tries to deny her love for him .

This poem is about charming a woman, or at least that's what I get out of it. She is intrigued by what charm lay ahead but she is fearful to truly investigate for fear it's not real or isn't what she really wants. So she peers from under a veil hoping it's what she wants
