Love

By William Shakespeare

TELL me where is Fancy bred,
Or in the heart or in the head?
How begot, how nourished?
 Reply, reply.
It is engender’d in the eyes,
With gazing fed; and Fancy dies
In the cradle where it lies.
Let us all ring Fancy’s knell:
I’ll begin it,–Ding, dong, bell.
All. Ding, dong, bell.

Old English and the time that has passed between our\’ a Shakespeare\’s time makes many things hard to interpret. This is indeed a wonderful poem as are most of the great bard\’s works. But, knowing the context and understanding the words makes all the difference. This is not a love poem, but instead talks about how \”fancy,\” or in the Elizabethan age you could call it \”fleeting admiration\” passed quickly.

The context, actually, comes from a play in which Bassanio compares the potential riches of a golden cask to the relatively poor appearance of a lead cask… and in the end, chooses the lead because of its modest appearance.

Taken from another source on the net:
\”The song which is sung, beginning \”Tell me where is fancy bred,\” has ominous lyrics. Bassanio surveys the caskets, reads their inscriptions, and is reminded by the background music that \”fancy\” is sometimes bred in the heart and is sometimes bred in the head. The words seem to warn him not to judge by external appearance. Consequently, Bassanio rejects the golden casket; it is a symbol for all \”outward shows\”; likewise, he rejects the silver casket, calling it a \”common drudge / \’Tween man and man.\” Instead, he chooses the casket made of \”meagre lead,\” which is the least attractive of the caskets — if they are judged by appearance alone.\”

How can you NOT understand it?
Shakespeare is asking, where is love? where can i find it? does it come from the heart? or even the head? you can\’t see it, let\’s call for it…
    Help?

there are sometimes where people can relate there own feelings like Willam, but there are just some feeling were you just have to keep them inside the heart,
i can relate to this poem as i write poems as well most of the time,
this is so true is love in the heart? or the head?:X

    I LOVE HIM..
and yes it is a shame he has to pass.

He\’s asking, where does Love come from? The head or the heart? How does it get nurtured and grow? And then replying to his question: it comes from the eyes (basically when he looks at a hot girl) and in that moment it\’s nourished (fed) and then dies. It\’s meant to be humorous.
