The Richest Girl In Town

Published by at 8:36 pm under Sad Love Poems

I kissed
her lips
and wished her well,
watched her
walk away all along the cobbles
kicking stones
just like a little girl
i guess she was like that, sometimes
she
stopped under a lamppost
lit a cigarette
i still think i heard her sigh
before she squared
her shoulders
about to look back
then
turned the corner
and was gone

i stayed there awhile
i could have lived my life over again
just for her
that night, all night
we had her bedroom door shut tight
keeping out the man
who makes love only
to help love himself

i see now, and i know why,
oh she is life itself
